SHOT Show 2018: Hunting with the New Generation

OSG's Michael Bane and Lynn Burkhead sit down on the third day of SHOT Show 2018 to discuss the recent trends in hunting culture.

Michael mentions his conversation with the president of the NRA, Pete Brownell, and how the younger generation is not taking to hunting like generations before. Lynn explains that he has had a similar discussion with Ronnie Strickland of Mossy Oak about taking people out on hunting trips and hooking them on the sport for life. One positive trend the pair is noticing is the rise in women hunters, although Burkhead is still working on getting his wife into the blind.

The conversation moves onto the idea that shooting your own meat gives you control over what ends up on your plate. Both agree that they would rather eat something shot by themselves, rather than an expensive cut with unknown origins. Though some might believe killing animals is wrong, Bane and Burkhead agree that hunting is humane and ethical. Hunters around the country pay for licenses, tags, etc., which go toward improving the population and habitat of wildlife.
