Da bears — Kick Off To Canada; Day Two

Da bears — Kick Off To Canada; Day Two
The town of Waterhen isn't much to look at, even when the sun does shine

Unlike the sunny drive up to Agassiz Lodge from Winnipeg,  the following morning broke cold and windy.  Not ideal bear conditions, but we are here, what else are you going to do.  I hope I brought enough clothes. Nearly freezing to death while sighting in my Wild West Guns custom 45-70 with Zeiss Compact Point red dot, I realize I hadn't brough enough clothes and resigned myself for a cold evening on the stand.

Putting on every layer I had, I headed out amongst fluries of snow  the end of May?!?  Only in Canada.  After four hours of sitting on stand, I realized I was right on two fronts, the bears were not moving and I was as cold as I had been in a long time.  33 degrees, light snow, strong north wind and a bug suit combined with a wind breaker was not enough.  I shiver non-stop until dark, when I finally caught movement.  A young boar strolled in like he owns the place.  Tipping the barrel over, he starts to feed.  A possible shooter on the last day, he is not a shooter on the first.  Had he been a color phase bear, it might have swayed my decision, but not yet.  I waited until dark but no others showed.  A quick confab back at the truck with the other hunters told similar stories.  All froze to death and just saw small bears...however not bad for a first night in rough weather.

Hopefully the weather changes tomorrow.

New for 2021: 6.8 Western Rifle Cartridge

The 6.8 Western features a .277-caliber bullet loaded into a case that's been optimized to fit longer, heavier bullets. Consider it a .270 on steroids, or more accurately, an improved version of the .270 Winchester Short Magnum, which never gained enough traction to make it mainstream.
