Sure-Shot Game Calls' Yentzen One2 Duck Call

History and modern innovation don't always fit together comfortably, but they appear to do so with Charlie Holder and his Groves, Texas based Sure-Shot Game Calls company, a group that is the inventor of the time-honored double-reed duck call.

On the final day of SHOT Show 2018, OSG live stream host Michael Bane met up with Holder to talk duck hunting memories and to discuss the attributes of Sure-Shot's new Yentzen One2 double-reed duck call.

With Bane kicking things off, the well-known TV show host discussed some of his fond memories of his grandfather and others in the family blowing duck calls and chasing quackers in the Mississippi Delta.

Holder followed suit with tales of his company's own waterfowling heritage that began with a U.S. Patent in the 1950s, a world duck calling championship by company co-founder Jim "Cowboy" Fernandez in 1959, and even a "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" appearance where Cowboy made some mallard music on the company's original walnut constructed double-reed Yentzen Classic.

With the new Yentzen One2 constructed from a rugged proprietary material, the company's innovative call also features a Screw Lock design, a new double-reed system, a reengineered tone chamber, and a throwback walnut band wrapped around the space-age call with the result being a modern-day remake of a timeless classic, all while continuing to produce that sweet mallard music.

Does the marriage of tradition and innovation work for Holder's company? After he demonstrated the One2 call's excellent volume and ducky sounds — and noted that retailers have had trouble keeping the new call on the shelf this past fall — the general consensus at the 40th anniversary SHOT Show is that it certainly does!

Venison Curry Recipe

Hearty and flavorful, this curry is simple to make and requires just a few ingredients you can likely find at your local store. The cooking method turns tough cuts tender, making it a great choice for shoulder and hindquarter cuts from deer, elk and other venison. Bonus points if you use axis deer, which are native to India.

Stuffed Elk Backstrap Recipe

Stuffed Elk Backstrap Recipe

Take your venison loin to a whole new level with this delicious reverse-seared stuffed elk backstrap. Smoking the backstrap on a Camp Chef Woodwind pellet grill first, then finishing it on a blazing-hot skillet or flattop, creates a perfectly cooked, medium-rare steak with a crispy, seared exterior. The filling of diced mushrooms and creamy Boursin cheese adds a whole new level of amazing flavors to an otherwise classic smoked venison loin.

New for 2021: 6.8 Western Rifle Cartridge

The 6.8 Western features a .277-caliber bullet loaded into a case that's been optimized to fit longer, heavier bullets. Consider it a .270 on steroids, or more accurately, an improved version of the .270 Winchester Short Magnum, which never gained enough traction to make it mainstream.
